Amnesia

Amnesia, loss or impairment of memory. Amnesia is usually associated with some form of brain damage, but it may also be caused by severe psychological trauma. Amnesia with a physical cause is called organic amnesia, whereas amnesia of psychological origin is called functional amnesia.Amnesia varies in its degree of severity. For example, a mild concussion may cause a person to forget recent events, but the memory loss may last only for several hours. On the other hand, severe head injuries may lead to permanent memory loss and an inability to learn new information. Amnesic individuals may retain normal cognitive abilities in other areas, such as language. Anterograde amnesia is impairment in the ability to lay down new memories. It typically results from damage to the areas of the brain involved in long-term memory, including the hippocampus, the temporal lobes, and the frontal lobes. Such damage may result from brain infection (encephalitis), alcoholism, stroke, anoxia (severe oxygen deprivation), or head injury. An individual with severe anterograde amnesia might spend an entire day with a person and then, within a brief time, totally fail to recognize that person. Retrograde amnesia refers to difficulties in recalling or recognizing past events and experiences. It typically accompanies anterograde amnesia and is especially common following concussive head injury. A person with retrograde amnesia has trouble remembering recent events, events from further in the past, or both.Amnesia is a symptom rather than a disease, and treatment attempts to determine and remove the basic cause. No treatments available will bring back the memory capacity of brain-damaged patients. However, these patients can be helped to make better use of their remaining memory skills. The most effective methods rely on memory aids, ranging from simple devices such as notebooks and timers to computer-based organizers and paging systems. Given such help, a severely amnesic person may be able to live independently.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture, ancient Chinese medical procedure involving insertion and manipulation of needles at any of more than 360 points in the human body. Applied to relieve pain during surgery or in rheumatic conditions, and to treat many other illnesses, acupuncture is used today in most hospitals in China and by some private practitioners in Japan and elsewhere, including the United States.Acupressure, a variant in which the practitioner uses manipulation rather than penetration to alleviate pain or other symptoms, is in widespread use in Japan and has begun to find adherents in the U.S. Also known as shiatsu, acupressure is administered by pressing with the fingertips—and sometimes the elbows or knees—along a complex network of trigger points (see below) in the patient's body.Acupuncture needles dating from 4,000 years ago have been found in China. The first needles were stone; later, bronze, gold, or silver were used, and today needles are usually made of steel. Initially, needles were used only to prick boils and ulcers. Acupuncture was developed in response to the theory that there are special meridian points on the body connected to the internal organs and that vital energy flows along the meridian lines. According to this theory, diseases are caused by interrupted energy flow, and inserting and twirling needles restores normal flow.

Acclimatization

Acclimatization, also physiological adaptation, process by which an organism becomes better adapted to exist in an environment different from the one to which it was indigenous. If the environmental difference is extreme, changes take place in the structure and physiology of the organism. Each organism, however, has certain limits of temperature and other conditions within which it can survive, and some alleged instances of acclimatizing have merely been instances of unsuspected hardiness in the organism.Humans, for example, can acclimate to extreme conditions through changes in normal physiological processes. Persons who move from a temperate to a hot, dry climate undergo changes in heart rate and body temperature such that in time they perspire less, and their perspiration contains less salt. Although at an altitude of 7600 m (25,000 ft) most persons need to breathe high-pressure oxygen for survival, through gradual acclimatization they may become able to breathe unaided. This is due to an increase in the number of red blood cells, which contain oxygen-carrying hemoglobin. The increase is mediated by the hormone erythropoietin, secreted by the kidneys. In addition, a change in chemical composition within the red blood cells promotes migration of hemoglobin into the body tissues, where oxygen is needed. The human organism also exhibits a response to the absence of natural light. As with most life forms, humans normally function in what is called a circadian rhythm corresponding to the length of the day. Humans who have lived underground under experimental conditions continue to show cyclical changes in physiology, demonstrating the existence of a natural biological clock (Biological Clocks). The period dictated by this internal clock, however, is slightly longer than one day.Acclimatization may also refer to psychological changes occasioned by a change in environments, as from a rural to an urban setting.

Aboriginal Australians

Aboriginal Australians or Aborigines, original inhabitants of Australia and their descendants. The term Aboriginal does not include the Torres Strait Islanders, a much smaller indigenous population in Australia whose homelands are the islands off the tip of the Cape York Peninsula in far northeastern Australia.Archaeological evidence suggests that Aboriginal people have lived in Australia for at least 50,000 years. They have inhabited every region of the island continent. Today they live in all states and mainland territories of Australia, with the highest population concentrations in the states of Queensland and New South Wales. In 2001 the Aboriginal population of Australia numbered approximately 427,000, or about 2.2 percent of the total population.Aboriginal people traditionally lived as hunter-gatherers in small family groups, hunting, fishing, and collecting a variety of plant foods. Most groups were nomadic or seminomadic and built simple brush or bark shelters. Hundreds of culturally distinct Aboriginal groups were spread across the Australian continent. They occupied a wide range of environments, from the savanna woodlands of the north to the harsh desert outback and temperate woodlands of the south. Like indigenous peoples elsewhere in the world, they developed an intimate understanding of the environment in which they lived. This connection to the land, and to its animals and plants, permeated every aspect of Aboriginal culture.

My view of Tibet.Lies there The Himalayas

This is a picture I've drawn in Photoshop to show you how I see the nature.

A-Bomb

Did you know?Months after the A-bomb(atomic bomb)was dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, death was uncontrollable. Why's that?Because the element that created the explosion was radioactive which can destroy human cells. Many baby born blind, abnormal because of the radioactivity.Imagine,a few of these bombs can destroy the whole world!

Hillarious jokes

What did the policeman say to his tummy?
You're under a vest.

What's short,green and goes camping?
A boy sprout.

Knock,knock!
Who's there?
Little old lady.
Little old lady who?
I didn't know you could yodel.

How did the monkey make toast?
He put it under the gorilla.

Why is a farmer cruel?
Because he pulls the corn by its ears.

Why can't a man's head be twelve inches wide?
Because if it was,it would be a foot.

What do you call an Eskimo's cow?
An Eskimoo.

Why did the thief take a bath?
So he could make a clean getaway.

Beggars:

Somedays ago I was walking down an aisle till I spotted a beggar I stopped walking. He was quite young I guessed.Maybe around 38-40 years of age.He had a little beard and rough skin but everything was almost okay.He was sitting on the street along a corner calling God for mercy.I asked him,"Why are you calling God?You don't seem to have any fault." He looked at me curiously."My life is nothing but mess."he started."I had three children, all died in a flood. My wife caught a disease and the doctor said she should be contaminated. Then the doctor supplied me a small page containing names of medicines. That's why I am begging. If you give me some money I can buy my wife those medicines."he ended.I couldn't help no more.I grabbed a whopping 100Tk(our currency.About $1.5)and placed on his bowl.I felt really great that day to be a help to someone who was calling God for help.I felt like I was a messiah.

Disasters

Natural calamities are common in every country and in every land.It is a warning to human race of being too witty and doing the wrong thing. But what shocked me most was the hurricane Katrina.I was shocked not by the act of the hurricane but the by the act of people.U.S.A is a powerful country,I know and that's why she has friends to help her when needed. But it killed less people than the Tsunami that occurred between Asia and Oceania. Why don't we donate when there is danger on the other side of the world? Why do it always have to be the U.S.A?There are many types of dangers ahead. Why aren't we donating to the HIV AIDS fund then?Doesn't it kills hundreds and thousands of people annually?Come on people.Don't keep a eye open but open both.

Poltergeist

It is a German word for "noisy ghost".This name is given to unexplained phenomenon that invisibly moves objects or does mischief. No injury by poltergeist has been heard but sometimes great forces can be felt.

Bigfoot

Bigfoot is the name given to Yeti or Abominable(extremely repugnant or offensive)Snowman, legendary wild man of the Himalayas. The North Americans called it the Bigfoot while in Nepal,it is known as Yeti.Though there has been many claims by the people about the sightings of Bigfoot, there are still no proof. It is said that they are elusive,well-built,apelike,hairy and foul-smelling with facial features resembling those of a human being.

My Tooth

Why shouldn't be I angry? I mean,I've always brushed my teeth twice a day and now it is disturbing me with such a pain! The tooth I am talking about is one of my twelve molars.I don't know why the manufacturers do not care about pain relief. The only thing they care about is the brightening the teeth. That is a hell of a pain.

Quotations About Death And Dying:

"Now, sires," quoth he, "if that you be so leef
To fynde Death, turne up this croked way,
For in that grove I lafte hym, by my fey,
Under a tree, and there he wole abyde."

"She says, if you please, sir, she only wants to be let die in peace."
"What!...impossible! Tell her she can't be allowed to die in peace; it is against the rules of the hospital!"

A dead man oft is showered with praise
Who earned not such in all his days.

A ghost has made uneasy every bed.
You are not you without me and The dead
Only are pleased to be alone it said.

A man evaporates without an eye-witness.

A lot of people, on the verge of death, utter famous last words or stiffen into attitudes...they still want to arouse admiration and adopt a pose and tell a lie with their last gasp.

A man's dying is more the survivors' affair than his own.

A person doesn't die when he should but when he can.

Quotations About Houses:

He that builds a fair house upon an ill seat, committeth himself to prison.

Houses are like sentinels in the plain, old keepers of the weather watch...All colors wear soon away in the wind and rain, and then the wood is burned gray and the grain appears and the nails turn red with rust.

If you want a golden rule that will fit everybody, this is it: Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.

It's 'aving 'ouses built by men, I believe, makes all the work and trouble.

Old houses mended,
Cost little less than new before they 're ended.

When your house contains...so many services that the hardware could stand up by itself without any assistance from the house, why have a house to hold it up?

Quotations about God:

"You must sit down," says Love, "and taste my meat."
So I did sit and eat.

Abide with me from morn till eve,
For without Thee I cannot live;
Abide with me when night is nigh,
For without Thee I dare not die.

Adam...is the divine handwriting, which is not in characters and letters (for His handwriting transcends both characters and letters, even as His word transcends sound and syllables, and His pen transcends reed and steel, and His hand transcends flesh and bone).

After all, is our idea of God anything more than personified incomprehensibility?

All men, somewhere, in some loneliness of their pain or of their thought, come close to God; there is no invulnerable heathen.

All proofs or disproofs that we tender
Of His existence are returned
Unopened to the sender.

All right, my lord creator, Don Miguel, you too will die and return to the nothing whence you came. God will cease to dream you!

Hero Of The Day

I am feeling very happy today. In the newspaper I saw about a old man(about the age of 83)who himself alone planted more than 66,000 varieties of trees.Good thing there.Lots and lots of oxygen to consume!

V-ray Rendering System

ChaosGroup has invented an excellent renderer(a software which renders 3d objects)called V-ray.This plug-in has all the features including global illumination and also caustic effects. It is a good competitor against Brazil Rendering System(developed by SplutterFish) and Mental ray renderer(developed by Mental images). But the best thing about this renderer is that,it is much more cheaper than the two mentioned above.

Quotations about Fathers:

Any father whose son raises a hand against him is guilty:of having produced a son who raised his hand against him.

How many a father have I seen,
A sober man, among his boys,
Whose youth was full of foolish noise,
Who wears his manhood hale and green.

If the man who turnips cries,
Cry not when his father dies,
'Tis a proof that he had rather
Have a turnip than his father.

It's all any reasonable child can expect if the dad is present at the conception.

My father was frightened of his mother. I was frightened of my father, and I'm damned well going to make sure that my children are frightened of me.

Quotations about Mothers:

A mother is a mother still,
The holiest thing alive.

A mother! What are we worth really? They all grow up whether you look after them or not.

Being a mother is a noble status, right?Right. So why does it change when you put "unwed"or"welfare"in front of it?

I am old enough to be-in fact am-your mother

It is not that I half knew my mother.I knew half of her:the lower half-her lap, legs, feet, her hands and wrists as she bent forward.

Mother doesn't cook...she burns.

No matter how old a mother is she watches her middle-aged children for signs of improvement.

Global Warming

Everybody put your heads down cause the earth is warming up!Global warming means the rise in temperate against the earth's average temperature of atmosphere, oceans and landmasses of earth. The main cause of this warming is believed to be the burning of fossil fuels, like coal, oil and natural gase. These things release carbon dioxide gas into the atmosphere which in turn heats up the whole earth.Sources of major air pollutants include individual actions, such as driving a car, and industrial activities, such as manufacturing products or generating electricity.

Making songs and loops

If you love to create high-quality songs or loops to get huge applause, use FLStudio 5.1 (FruityLoops Studio). The program provides a quite user-friendly interface but you need some time to get the hang of it.The virtual instruments there are of very high-qualities.So you will get just the sound of the instrument you like to hear.It provides guitar, piano, electric guitar and man,the list is endless. You can even produce unique instruments and effects by completely tuning the functions your way. After you've completed a song, you can easily export it to popular sound formats such as wav,mp3,ogg and many more.

Tomahawk Cruise missile

Do you know how the popular Tomahawk cruise missile works?Well,it is pretty simple.By using GPS technology. The missile is released from a ship and then when it reaches a particular altitude the fins or wings of it springs out.Infront of it is a GPS receiver which well, receives the signals from various satellites. It then positions itself with the information of the location inserted into its memory. When it reaches its destination it dives towards it and BANG!

Washing CDs

You will often see that newly bought CDs gain scratches easily. This is because they attract dust particles easily as they don't have any protection. To not to attract dust particles ever again, use a anti-dust gun which emits positively charged particles. Thus, makes a neutral contact with the dust particles who have negative charges.

Almanac of the Absurd

As he neared hobo name No.436 (Hot Gnome Jimmy Jackson),John Hodgman hit a wall."I really started to doubt not just the list of 700 hobo names but the entire project," he says, referring to his new book,"The Areas of My Expertise," a kind of almanac parody that claims to contain "complete world knowledge." "It seemed to wholly embody the madness of doing this book, filled with fake history and fake facts." Such as: the abbreviated words used by submariners to conserve oxygen, failed palindromes to avoid when writing,a brief timeline of the lobster in America and jokes that have never produced laughter.Somehow,"The Areas of My Expertise" doesn't come across as silly. The entries, plainly false, are unnervingly plausible."It was very important to me that it not be too absurd," says Hodgman, who is also a contributor to McSweeney's and NPR's "This American Life." "Somehow, these fake pearls of nonwisdom actually manage to contain some real wisdom." Hence, entries like "History's Worst Men's Haircuts" and "Handy Measurements of Time When You Do Not Have a Watch." "It's like sonar," Hodgman says."You try to go out into the dark waters of fakeness and ping against something plausible."

Making new lines

Stem-cell scientists love a good challenge. Here's one : can you create embryonic stem-cell lines without destroying healthy embryos? Two new reports, released by the journal Nature, say yes.At least, yes in mice. The studies take very different approaches. In the first, scientists at MIT's Whitehead Institute figured out how to derail a gene that is critical to the formation of placenta. The end result : an embryo that is capable of providing stem cells, but is incapable of implanting in the womb.In the second study, led by Advanced Cell Technology in Worcester,Massachusetts, researchers extracted one cell out of eight cell embryos. Each cell was used to generate stem-cell lines;the original "biopsied" embryos survived. After implantation in mice, some even developed into live pups.Mice aren't humans,so nobody knows if the science will translate. An embryo doomed for demise may not quash the ethical debate. And biopsying an embryo is unlikely to be risk-free.New hope, but new challenges, too.

To help purify the environment you don't need to pull heavy trollies or trim the whole

terrain. Instead, follow these simple but valuable techniques:

1. Use Bamboo flooring
2. Usage of compact fluorescents
3. Solar roofing (PV Solar Tiles)
4. Use Dual-Flush Toilets (nothing personal!)
5. Do insulation of the house (in warmer countries only)
6. Continuous-Flow Water Heaters (contact Rinnai,Bosch etc.)
7. Do not use DDT insecticides
8. Don't use paint or chemicals containing CFCs(chlorofluorocarbon)

Following these techniques can save you upto $1200 a year! Then why don't we use these advantageous opportunities? Cause we are lazy. Please tell this to your friends and relatives. Thanks to Reader's Digest

Below are some "Did you know" facts about our childhood friend Bears:
There are mainly eight types of bear. They are giant panda, spectacled bear, sun bear, sloth bear,Asiatic black bear,American black bear, brown bear, polar bear.A male bear is named boar,a female is sow and a young is named cub.Bears have a keen sense of smell that is seven times more powerful than that of dogs.Bears have an excellent memory that helps them return from afar to an abundant food location year after year. After bears mate, the bear embryo undergoes delayed implantation, in which it halts development and becomes inactive for as long as six months before implanting in the mother's uterus. Bear attacks are extremely rare and most result when a human surprises a bear, provoking it to respond defensively.

Did you know Newton was reluctant to share his research with other scientists for fear they would take credit for his discoveries.French writer Voltaire first recorded the story that a falling apple gave Newton the inspiration for his theory of gravitation.Voltaire cited Newton's niece as his source for the story.

Who doesn't know Albert Einstein? The man beyond any genius. Here is a little bio of his.He is a German-born American physicist who was born in March 14,1879 at Ulm,Germany. He is best known for proposing the theory of relativity, a physical theory of gravity, space, and time.He also explained the photoelectric effect and Brownian motion.Did you know that Einstein could not find a job in physics upon graduating from college, and became a technical assistant in the Swiss Patent Office. He worked on theoretical physics in his spare time.Another outstanding news is Einstein did not receive a Nobel Prize for his theory of relativity.

Nuclear bomb. The most horrifying mass destructive weapon ever to be produced. But do you know how it works? It works by the combined action of particles called atoms which are so tiny that we can't see even with a microscope. In the center of the atom, there is a shell named nucleus which contains the particles protons and neutrons. Some of the atoms are radioactive. That means the continuous emission of smaller particles. When a radioactive element such as Uranium-235 is splitted by a single neutron(it has no charge),a vast amount of energy is released. This energy can destroy an area of about 25 km.
